What is a Regulated Consultant?
A regulated consultant is a member of Immigration Consultant of Canada Regulatory Council required to attend regular continuing professional development seminars and conferences to ensure that he/she is kept up to date for the latest Immigration developments.
A consultant is awarded points at these seminars and conferences and must accrue a stipulated number of points in order to be eligible to re-register with ICCRC on an annual basis. As a Regulated member, a consultant is bound to practice in accordance with the ICCRC Code of Conduct.
To become a member of the council, must complete and pass a comprehensive and extensive course in Canadian Immigration Law and Regulations and go through a rigorous application process, which requires evidence of good character, and tests knowledge and language skills. For added security and client protection, regulated consultants are fully insured for errors and omissions and can be subject to complaints that are all dully investigated by ICCRC.
BEWARE OF "GHOST CONSULTANT"
What is a ghost consultant?
Ghost consultant are non licensed immigration consultant who operate underground by giving false hopes and guaranteed to applicants about their application, charging exorbitant amount, and does not have adequate knowledge and training. These the people who have done processing the documents for their relative or friends and felt that they mastered the processing, as a result they operate their immigration business and called themselves immigration consultant or specialist.
Who can represent you?
Immigration representatives are people who offer immigration advice or assistance to visa applicants. Some applicants may choose to consult a representative to act on their behalf with Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), the Immigration and Refugee Board or the Canada Border Services Agency.
Paid immigration representatives
The only representatives who may charge a fee to represent or advise you on immigration and refugee matters with the Government of Canada are:
- Lawyers who are members in good standing of a Canadian provincial or territorial law society; or Immigration consultants who are members in good standing of the Immigration Consultant of Canada Regulatory Council or ICCRC
- Notaries who are members in good standing of the Chambre des notaires du Québec
